Time period
The book was written in around the 1830's because of how we are almost tertian that the time is during slaver witch was around that time. I also understood that the grammar was not so good and seemed like it was a southern accent witch was where most slaves where brought in and worked. Another key point is how they talk about money and how is so
value even a dollar. The amount you could get with five dollars back then is much greater than it is now and witch leads me to believe that all of it comes together and was around that time period.
How does the perspective of the narrator influence the story?
I believe that since the story is coming from Hucks's point of view it is very bias and only getting one side of the story. I think that many things can be made it because it is a young boy and younger people like to exaggerate things and blow them out of proportion. The story would be a lot different if it was coming from a nurtural point of view and would get both sides of the story more, and more points of view on the situation.

What is the story solomon and his child and how does Jim interpret the story?
Soloman is known for being very wise, two women came in with one baby and both claimed that they where the mother. He suggested cutting the baby in half and jim thought this was very folish of him.
What does Jim's reaction to Huck tell us?
Jim was offended by the prank the Huck pulled on him, and this shows that Jim cares about him. I think Jim is a very nice man because the way he cares for Huck but just dosent understand Hucks humor.
From a historical standpoint, why is Jim superstitious
Jim is very superstitious because he is a slave and is very uneducated and makes things up or belives things out of confusion. I would be the same way if i were him because i would not have real answers to things i wondered about, so myths and make belive things would be the next closest things.
What does Huck's apology to Jim tell us about Huck?
When Huck apologized to Jim, this said a lot about Huck as a person. In this time period, nobody would ever apologize to a slave because they believed that slaves were not important. Huck apologizing shows that he is open minded and may actually care about Jim.
Huck giving up Jim
Jim is contemplating whether he should give Jim up or help him escape. If he turned Jim in, the bond and "friendship" that they have formed would be ruined, and Huck would likely feel bad for Jim. If Huck helps Jim escape, he would be seen as an abolitionist and get scolded for helping a slave escape. When the men asked about the 5 slaves, Huck decided to help Jim by telling them that there was a disease (smallpox) on the boat and they would be exposed to it if they were around it. The men were convinced and allowed Huck to continue.

His dad went to jail for getting drunk downtown.
Describe the Time Period of the Novel-
The time period of this novel was in the 1800's. This is shown through the language that they use such as the N word, how slaves are still relevant, and the level of education.
How Does the Perspective of the Narrator Influence the Story? -
The perspective of the narrator is in first person and told by Huckleberry Finn. This makes the story sometimes one sided and exaggerated since it is a 12 year old telling the story. Since he's telling the story we also have access to his thoughts, feeling, and emotions.
Week 2: Chapters 5-11
Explain Why Pap has Huck Locked Up-
The reason why Pap took Huck was because he kept going to school and Pap didn't want him too. Pap also wanted Huck's money that Judge Thatcher was holding for him. Whenever Pap went out he locked up Huck so that he could get drunk and party.
Create a Visual of How Huck Escapes The Shanty-
In chapter 8 Huck and Jim run into each other. Huck says that people will call him a “low down Ablitionist and dispise me for keeping mum” in reference to Jim running away. Explain what it means to be an Abolitionist. Why is it Huck is concerned about being called one? You’ll have to consider both the time period and the setting of the novel to answer the question -
To be an abolitionist means that you are in favor of abolishing slavery or ending it. He's concerned about being called one because people would think he helped Jim run away because he didn't think slavery was right.
There are several things that give Huck away when he pretends to be a girl. List them. Then, come up with 3 things that would give a boy away and 3 things that would give a girl away (if the roles were reversed) in our modern times -
The way he threw the iron at the mouse, he couldn't thread the needle, and he was super fidgety.
Boy: Their voice, how they act around the same gender, and body shape.
Girl: Body shape, the way you walk, and how they sit.
Week 3: Chapters 12-16
What is the story of King Solomon and his child? How does Jim interpret that story?
Two women had given birth to children. In the night one woman set her baby far away from her so that she wouldn't roll over her child in the middle of the night. The second women left her baby near her and rolled over and killed in it the night. The foolish lady who had killed her child claimed that the wise lady's child was her own. When they talked to King Solomon about it he suggested that they cut the child in half and give one half to the first lady and one to the second. The foolish woman did not protest toward cutting the child in half, while the other lady did. The wide lady asked him to spare the life of the child and to just give him to the other lady. King Solomon decided that the child was the wise lady's because no mother would ever let their child die. Jim thought that King Solomon was actually going to cut the boy in half because he had so many wives and children that he could afford it.
When Jim wakes up after their separation in the fog, what does Jim's reaction to Huck's joke tell us about him? How do you feel about Jim at this point?
Once Jim found out that Huck had been playing a joke on him his reaction was bad. Jim was very upset with Huck because he was worried sick and cared about Huck a lot. Plus, he had already thought he lost him once. Jim's reaction showed how much he cared about Huck and how much he hated being made a fool out of. Since he was uneducated and a slave he probably already was made a fool out of a lot, but now that it was by Huck, someone he really cared about, it was even worse. At this point I feel badly for Jim because he was very upset Huck would do that to him.
Jim is very superstitious. From a historical standpoint, why do you think this is?
From a historical standpoint Jim is very superstitious because he is uneducated and has no other way of explaining why certain things happen. If someone tells him something he will most likely believe it.
“It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger – but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither.” What does this line tell us about Huck?
This line tells us that Huck was nervous to talk to Jim and apologize. It the culture at this time slaves were never right and never deserved to be apologized to. It was almost like their feelings didn't matter. Since Huck was raised this way it was a big deal to apologize to him but it tells us that Huck is better than society and was caring and knew that it really upset Jim who was a true friend of his.
At the end of chapter 16 Huck is struggling with giving Jim up. Outline the battle that he has with himself, and explain his actions when the men come up looking for the 5 escaped slaves.
In chapter 16 Huck begins to contemplate evrything he is doing. He doesn't know if it better to give Jim up as a slave and betray their friendship, or to help Jim escape but then be responsible for helping free a slave. As talked about in earlier questions, Jim doesn't want to be seen as an abolitionist. He is put in a difficult position. He says that either way he loses something. When the men come looking for the 5 escaped slaves and they ask if Jim is in the boat he says yes but so is his family and they are sick with smallpox. The men didn't want to get sick or exposed and out of sympathy, or pity, they left him with money. Huck chose to protect Jim and saver their special friendship. He has quick thinking to make up and excuse that would keep the men from finding Jim.

Grangerford Family
The Grangerford family are constantly on the lookout for the Shephardsons. When Huck passes by, they immediately ask if he knows of the Shephardson family. They are also extremely cautious when allowing Huck to enter their home. The doors were previously bolted and told Huck to walk slowly and only peak his head in before entering. A man in his 60's and two men in their 30's were holding up guns. Buck, who was only around Huck's age, was even carrying a gun when walking out of his bedroom. This made me think that something significant happened between these two families, and it was not good. The Grangerford family also seem to have many possessions. During chapter 17, Huck describes the Grangerford house. The house is much nicer than the houses that Huck is used to, and he even claimed that they made the best food he had ever had.
Mark Twain alludes the the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons is about traditiional feuds between farmer and rancher, Why would he write this into the novel? What does it say about these two occupations at the time?
I think that the reason Mark Twain wrote this into the novel was to show what it was like at that time to be a exist in that business although they were also rivals or they clashed. This is the same that the Grangerfords and Sheperdsons were because they had to co-exist in church and then go back to their rivalry. This shows us that at the time these two occupations were very competitive with each other and they were competing for the same customers
In the end of chapter 18 when Huck tells us this he says it because he was still upset and in shock about the two Grangerfords dying. Although he hadn't been with them long he very much liked the family and had become friends with Buck. He admired the family and enjoyed their genuine household and very gentle and kind father. Maybe that was because his father was never like that. The narrator's perspective plays a huge role because you feel like you are really talking to him or that he is talking to you. He talks to you like a friend and you can tell that he was still grieving the loss of his friends. It makes us empathize more than we would normally if a third party was telling us.
Toward the end of chapter of chapter 18 Huck says, "I dont want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I'll cut it pretty short." Huck says this prior to telling us about the big battle. How does our narraters perspective play a role in what we think and feel reading this section?
Lit circle #5
At the very end of Chapter 22 we see the handbill that the king and the Duke will pass out. The Duke says "If that line dont fetch them, i dont know Arkansaw" Why would the line at the bottom of the handbill work to get people into the play?
On the handbill at the bottom the biggest line of all read children and ladies are not admitted, the reason why this would work to get more people attending the play is because if there is a play that is only for men their might be scenes in it that arent appropriate for the woman and children. The men thought it would be a time just for them to take a break from the family and hangout with the boys, and that this show is better than any other one.
Towards the end of chapter 23 we see this line" What was the use to tell Jim these warnt real kings and Duke? it wouldent a done no good, and besides, it was just as i said, you couldent tell them from the real kind"
A. Why dosent Huck see the use in telling Jim?
The reason that Huck dosent tell Jim about it is that they had already talked about it and Jim trusted them and thought they werent con-men. the conversation would have been pointless and could have ended in an argument. Also, Huck dident want Jim to feel stupid again like the time when he lied about the dream he had. It was just for the better good of everyone.
B. What does Huck mean by "you couldent tell them from the real kind"
When Huck says this he means that the reason they couldent tell them from the real kind is because they had never met or even seen a duke or king in person. they would have no idea what they act like, look like, or talk like. Also , the king and the duke were very good at tricking people and huck and Jim werent very eduacated. They could be classified as gullible. This is what Huck meant.
The finale line in chapter 24 reads " it was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race." What is Huck talking about? What does it tell us about Huck that he feels this way?
When they were in town the king was told that a man had died. He was rick and they were waiting for hit two brothers to show up because everytime in his will was left to them. One brother was deaf. The next day the King and duke impersonated the two brothers. The Duke acted as the deaf one, they showed up pretending that they were his brothers and they cried and put on a whole act. They walked up the moutain to the home of the deceased with twon folks allowing them to cry on thier shoulders. Huck is so ashamed because he cant belive they would actually do this. it was horrible., also us that huck does not support what they are doing and he is a very sympathetic person. he would never want somone to do to him what the king and Duke just did to that family.
In chapter 25 we meet the doctor. How does the docter know that the king and the Duke are a fraud?
One of the main things that the doctor noticed showing that they were a fraud was thier british accents. The doctor said that they were some of the worst he had ever heard and that you could tell they were fake. he also mentioned how one day they would think of what they just did and get sick, the same feeling huck has been ecperiencing the whole time. the king and the Duke knew nothing about Mr.wilk and who he was as a person. if they were truly brothers they would have had more knowledge.
Lit circle #6
Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period?
The act of guarding a dead person from death until time of burial is known as "Shemira". The main reason that they had a guard was to protect the body from insects eating the body. It was done out of respect for the dead body because it shouldn't be abandoned before they get barried, just respect for that person
What do we learn (or reafirm) about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again in inside of two weeks?
We once again were reminded of the kind heart that Huck has. Huck could not sit their and see Mary Jane as upset that she was when she was reacting to the slaves family being split a part. She was extremely upset and Huck had noticed this. He also knew she was struggling with the death because he saw her crying alone at night by the casket. He wanted to make her feel better so he told her that the slaves will not be separated forever. I believe this shows how empathetic Huck is towards these slaves.
What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were?
When the two real brothers arrived it caused an issue and the lawyer decided to preform a test to see who the frauds were. He had the four men all sign a paper to compare those signatures to the letters. The test showed that the King and the Duke were frauds but the King complained to the lawyer saying it wasn't accurate since the real Harvey's hand was broken, and his brother serves as a scribe to him, they wouldn't be able to prove who is who. Then the real Harvey says that he knows of a tattoo on his brothers chest that no one else would know of. He also says that the man who dressed the body would back him up on it. Both the King and Harvey give detailed descriptions of the tattoo and the undertaker who dressed the dead man reveals the truth that he had no tattoo. It surprised everyone. They later dug up the body to find the truth then found a bag of six thousand dollars.
Lit circle #7
Huck says “You can’t pray a lie.” What lie is he trying to pray about? What does he mean?
Huck was wanting to pray for forgiveness about helping Jim escape. In that time it was illegal and not a good thing to do to help a black person escape from its owner. Although, it wasn't just any slave it was Jim. Huck became very close with Jim and couldn't help himself to do anything but help Jim. He knew by law that what he did was very wrong but in himself didn't want forgiveness because he felt this he did nothing wrong.
Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes?
Huck decided to write a letter to Tom telling him to let Watson know where Jim is at. He wrote the letter but then realized on how good of a friend Jim has been to him. He then decided he would to take the chance in order to stand by Jim. He tore up the letter so that Watson would never know where Jim is and he wasn't going to send him away.
Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal Jim. He says “Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer stealer!” What do you think of this?
I don't think I would word it as Huck was disappointed in Tom but caught of guard by the new actions Tom is displaying. Tom Sawyer went from being a guy who wanted to create a gang to steal and kill people to helping a slave escape. It may not seem like a big deal but then it was crazy. Also tom always did what he thought was cool and got approval from others. This new behavior of him going against things was surprising to Huck. I belive that it is kinda sad that it was such a big deal the somone helped somone that was a diffrent skin color out, but i guess that just it was back then.
The king and the duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the money , Why dont they?
The King and the Duke think about taking the $6,000 in gold that they found in the cellar, but instead of leaving now and playing it safe; they decide to wait and see if they can make even more money by selling the slaves and land. They are taking a riskier chance and going for double or nothing on this one.
Lit circle #8
In the process of breaking Jim free, what is toms motivation? What is Hucks motivation?
I think that Tom and Huck had different intentions when breaking Jim free. Tom just wanted to pull off the best break out in history and have everyone know his name. He wanted to be known for the escape of Jim. That is why he had to have style points and not do anything normal. Huck, however, just wanted Jim to be free again and not locked up. He truly cared about him and felt badly he was captured. Overall, Huck is doing it to actual free Jim and Tom is doing it so he can tell the story of how they broke Jim free.
What do Huck and Tom mean when they say "let on" about something? Why do they do this?
Huck and Tom created a rope using part of Jim's bed sheet. At the end of the paragraph Huck says, "We let on it took nine months to make it." When he said this he meant that they pretended it took them nine months. Anytime they use this phrase it means they pretended to do something. They most likely use this and pretend because they want their story to be crazier and more intense than it really was.
Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncles slave?
Tom is writing these letters so Uncle Silas does not advertise he has captured Jim the runaway slave in the newspapers of St. Louis and New Orleans because Miss Watson would see them. He does it to prevent Uncle Silas from posting that ad and because in the books he has read it says to do so.
we've worked a great deal on this novels satirical elements. How is the planning and plotting of Jim escape by Tom and Huck satire?
I think the reason it is satire is because it is making fun of how much extra we do just to please people and be "cool". They could have freed Jim in a much faster and easier way but Tom wanted to make it have style so he could tell the story to people and become famous or more cool. We do this in life too. We go through much more trouble than needed just to impress people. It is satire because it is sad to think we go through way more than we need to just to impress our peers. This is my opinion on it.
Towards the end of chapter Huck says " I snowed he was white inside" about Jim. Why does he say this and what des he mean?
When they got to the boat Jim refused to let the boat take off even if it took 40 years for them to get a doctor for Tom. Jim knew that Tom would do the same thing for him. This was amazing because Jim is risking his life of being caught for the safety of Tom and says he wouldn't get off the boat until a doctor came. Huck says, "I knowed he was white inside" and this means that he knew he had the heart of not just a slave but of a white. Basically, no other slaves would risk their freedom for a whites well-being, unless you have a heart as big as Jim's. Jim is empathetic just like Huck
Lit circle #9
"And then when i went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good i felt mean and like i couldent look her in the face."
Huck says this because he feels ashamed. He is upset with himself because Huck is a caring, empathetic person and feels like he has not treated her the way she deserves to be treated. She is caring and "mothering" Huck and he feels like he has not done enough to deserve this from her. We know this because he says he "felt mean and like I couldn't look her in the face.", which shows us that he is ashamed of himself for not being there for her.
"So i says, i got have help, somehow, and the minute i says it, out crawls the N word from somewheres, and says he'll help, and he done it understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him?
When Tom was too injured to be left alone, Jim was there to help. Jim somewhat nursed Tom and cared for him so that he would be okay. Although Jim was not very educated, he still did his best to help. This shows us how loyal and selfless Jim is because he was taking a risk for Tom's life.
What do we learn about tom after what he says after waking up?
After Tom wakes up after his treatment form the gunshot wound, we learn a lot about Tom. We learned even more about how adventurous Tom is, and learned that he has a strong desire to have fun and live an eventful life. Tom enjoys the thrill, which is why he helped free Jim. He was in it for more of the thrill and excitement than the aftermath.
Thoughts on Huck
Now that I have read this novel, I am sure that Huck really was a good human. Huck had morals that were different than most of the other people at that time, but he stuck with them because he knew in his heart what was right. The fact that Huck had so much empathy for Jim showed a lot about his character. He also called Jim by his name, not just a slave, which is what most people back then would have done. Huck was somebody who was humble and selfless. He took many risks for other people throughout the story witch show so much about one person, and this made me like Huck more and more as I read.
